TO SMALLER POULTRY
One of the ways in which efficiency of laying poultry has increased in recent years has been in a decline in bird size. Professor A. L. Rae, professor of sheep husbandry at Massey University, told the poultry-farmers’ refresher course at Lincoln this week that this had been most marked in Britain once breeders had been released from the need to produce a dual-purpose bird. He suggested that in New Zealand
it was likely that the industry would also move towards specialised egg laying and broiler stock, and that with breeders also released from the pressure of maintaining size with the cull hen aspect in mind, bird size would also go down. But making allowance for bird size, Professor Rae said, New Zealand stock might not be so far behind British and American stock as had always been thought.
