FOR DAIRY MEN

Cream and town milk suppliers have once again joined together to organise a comprehensive programme for dairy farmers at the Lincoln College farmers’ conference.

The dairy programme of lectures, which will be held in Hudson Hall, will begin at 10.15 a.m. on Thursday, Mr G. Aldridge, of Martinborough, will lead off the programme of lectures. His subject is streamlined dairy farming. For the last four years Mr Aldridge has milked 100 cows by himself by using laboursaving methods. Most farmers will have heard of the next speaker, Dr. W. G. Whittlestone, of Ruakura. He is the man who developed the Ruakura relief valve and the Ruakura milk flow indicator which is very widely used throughout the dairy Industry. He has some new ideas on how to clean milking machines. Mr E. Brookbanks, veterinary advisory officer in the Department of Agriculture, will be giving results of some of his investigations into mastitis.

In the afternoon farmers will hear Mr S. J. Murphy, who is director of marketing of the New Zealand Dairy Production and Marketing Board. His topic will be export marketing of dairy products. To round off, Mr A. T. G. McArthur will discuss “Bossmanship.”

The field day on Friday covers such topics as pig housing, ultrasonic measurement of carcase quality, hygiene in the dairy shed, short cuts in dairy farming, new developments in herd improvement and the Buakura pig research programme. Mr David Joblin, who has taken Mr Dudley Smith’s place as research officer in pigs at Ruakura, will be present.

The day will begin at 10 a.m. on the property of Messrs H. J. Hurford and Sons, at Irwell, and after lunch at the Doyleston Hall, visits will be made to the properties of Messrs W. J. Simpson at Ellesmere and L. O. Wheeler, at Springston.
