Education For Young Girls
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) LONDON, May 14.
A school will be opened for 12 pregnant girls under the age of 16 at Caterham, Surrey.
The pregnant schoolgirl Is the total outcast of Western society—kicked out of school (“a disturbing influence”), kicked out of home (“a shameless hussy”), says the “Daily Mail.”
Britain’s welfare system makes no educational provision for her special plight. In 1962, the last year for which figures are available, 1200 babies were born to British girls under the age of 16. Lord Shawcross, president of the Rainer Foundation which is starting the school said:
“We are trying to pick up the pieces of these young lives.”
