NEW CITY PROPOSED
50,000 Persons In Waitakere (N.Z Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 15. A city of Waitakere, comprising seven wards with a population of about 50,360, has been proposed by the Local Government Commission.
The proposed city will have a council f 22 members, plus a mayor, which makes it larger than the Auckland City Council. Only local authorities which are affected can appeal against the proposal. They have until June 12 to lodge their appeals.
Within one month of the lodging of appeals a petition signed by at least 15 per cent of electors in any one affected area can request a poll to determine whether their area shall be included in the proposed city. Although the area known as Waitakere and having an historical association with that name is well outside the boundaries of the proposed city, the scheme sets out that the area shall be constituted as a borough and will be known as the City of Waitakere.
