RETIRING SOON
First Maori Dentist (N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN, May 15. The first Maori to qualify in dentistry in New Zealand, Mr W. T. Morete, will retire at the end of next month as the principal dental officer for Otago and Southland in the Division of Dental Health. Mr Morete has been in charge of the Otago-Southland area since 1950 and is due to retire officially on June 30. Mr Morete said he had seen many changes in dentistry since 1928 when he qualified. Maoris now appreciated more the value of proper care of their teeth. He introduced dental treatment to Maoris at a time when if a tooth gave pain It was pulled out. Educated at Waiomatatini Maori School and Te Atue College in Hawke’s Bay, Mr Morete entered the University of Otago Dental School in 1924.
