NEED FOR WHEAT
Farmers Urge Increase Every farmer with suitable arable land was “strongly exhorted” to grow wheat, and if possible increase his acreage, by the chairman of the agricultural section of the North Canterbury Federated Farmers (Mr J. F. N. Twose), in his report to the annual conference yesterday.
“I feel sure that the best incentive towards this would be an increase in the price of wheat,” Mr Twose said. “The savings in overseas funds by producing our own requirements is very great and also the need for more wheat in the world is increasing each year. Consequently, the chances of importing, plus the chances of increased costs of imported wheat, are worth considering,” he said. Referring to the sugar beet industry, Mr Twose said he felt much further study was needed before the scheme was entered upon. Little seemed to be known as to the difficulties and to the size and requirements of such an undertaking.
