Vietnam
Sir, —I see no reason why New Zealand should send military aid to South Vietnam. Economic aid for the purpose of helping to raise living conditions mignt be worth consideration. There is no point in supporting a military programme whose future success seems likely only to come through annihilation of a sizeable segment of the South Vietnamese people themselves. In past years we have seen the futility of carrying on this military campaign In South Vietnam. All the money that has been wasted and is being wasted is so badly needed for useful and positive, nonmilitary programmes. Only through such development programmes does the West have any hope of checking the march of Communism through South-east Asia.— Yours etc., R. H. NEFF. May 15, 1964.
