Merging Of Two States Closely Follows Revolt

Moves to combine Tanganyika and Zanzibar in “one sovereign state” come a litle more than three months after a revolt in the - Zanzibar “spice islands” deposed Sultan Seyyid Jamshid Bin Abdulla.
Zanzibar, with a sister island of Pemba, declared itself a “people’s Republic” last January and Sheikh Abeid Karume became President The combined population of the two States would be about 9,500,000. All but about 300,000 of these people would be in Tanganyika. Zanzibar, with a population of about 166,000, is the biggest coral island off the African coast while Pemba, of 380 square miles, has 134,000 inhabitants. Dr. Julius Nyerere became the first President of the new Republic of Tanganyika—a 362,000 square-mila territory —in Dar Es Salaam in December, 1962.
Tanganyika, a former Gv man colony in East Africa, became a. Republic one. year after becoming Africa’s twenty-ninth independent nation.
