Butler Talks With Rusk

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) WASHINGTON, April 27. The British Foreign Secretary (Mr R. A. Butler) and the U.S. Secretary of State (Mr Dean Rusk) began an important series of talks in Washington yesterday on Cyprus, the Middle East, and Malaysia.

Mr Butler said British concern over recent speeches by the U.A.R. President, Mr Nasser, would be among topics for discussion. The major concern of the talks would be “East-West relations, and the Middle East, which includes all the Arabian Peninsula,” he said. Dispatches from London pictured Mr Butler as coming to Washington to enlist American support for British efforts in some world trouble spots. Asked to comment on the reports, Mr Butler said: “We were intensely grateful when the Prime' Minister and I visited Washington (last February) for the

American support we got. “So much pleasure was given at the last visit that we hope it will be followed up on this visit.” , Mr Butler will be in Washington until Wednesday. Mr Butler said that he and Mr Rusk would also discuss the Far East, including Laos, Cambodia, and South Vietnam, and the dispute between Malaysia and Indonesia.' Mr Butler’S prime purpose in flying to Washington is to attend the council meeting of the Central Treaty Organisation, which opens on Tuesday. He said he thought Cyprus would be on the C.E.NT.O. agenda.
