“FLASH LIT UP LAKE"

Believed To Be Meteor

(N.Z. Press Association)

NEW PLYMOUTH, April 1. What they believe was a meteor passed close above two New Plymouth men while they were fishing on Lake Taupo on Monday evening.

Mr L. R. Meads, of Upjohn street, said that he and Mr R. Tong were fishing in one of the western bays of the lake, at about 10.30 p.m. The moon was hidden behind low cloud.

“Suddenly the clouds began to lighten as if morning was coming and we could see the whole lake as plain as day,” he said.

They heard a swishing noise above them and a large brilliantly-lit ball passed through the cloud and over their heads, travelled east to west.

“Three or four minutes later we heard a clap like thunder as if it had landed some distance away.”
