COLLECTION OF CUSTOMS

10p.c. Rise In Revenue Customs revenue collected in Christchurch in the year to March 31 was £9,945,933 more than 10 per cent more than in the year before, according to the latest customs return. The sharpest rise was in the collection of miscellaneous dues: £98,140 against £74,957 the year before. Customs and excise collections rose £533,256 to £6,958,182, tyre duty £1644 to £7968, and sales tax £383,588 to £2,862,496, while light dues were almost steady at £19,147. Collections in March totalled £745,689, against £727,536 in the same month last year. Details Details of the year’s custom revenue:— Customs and excise, £6,958,182 (as against £6,424,926 last year); petrol tax, nil (nil); tyres, £7968 (£6234); sales tax, £2,862,496 (£2,478,908); light dues, £19,147 (£19,876); miscellaneous, £98,140 (£74,957); total, £9,945,933 (£9,004,901). Details of revenue collected during March:— Customs and excise, £530,520 (£473,232); petrol tax, nil (nil); tyres, £409 (£386); sales tax, £203,772 (£242,482); light dues, £1555 (£2177); miscellaneous, £9433 (£9259); total, £745,689 (£727,536). WELLINGTON Estimated revenue collected by the Customs Department in Wellington during the 1953-M financial year totalled 159,230,329 compared with 147,708,838 in the 1962-63 financial year, according to the N.Z.P.A.

Details: Customs, 111,542,316 (110,418,787 last year); sales tax, 117,911,015 (113,891,704); petrol tax, 121.081,281 (119,466,762); tyre duty, 14245 (13223); other duties, £4,691,472 (14,931.362). Revenue collected during March, totalled 14,920,594, compared with 14,208,405 in March last year. OTAGO RETURNS Customs figures for the port of Otago last month at £352,365 14s 2d, are down slightly on the March, 1963, figures of £356,158 6s 2d.
