AIRPORT AIDS Tenders For Buildings
Tenders to erect six buildings for the instrument landing system at Christchurch Airport are expected to be called within the next two or three weeks. The Civil Aviation Administration hopes to have the equipment in use by the end of the year.
The first stage of the project will be started this month when Ryan Brothers will clear and level 40 acres of land at each end of the main runway.
The extremely sensitive instruments need perfectly flat land in their immediate vicinity to operate without interference. The land will be level to within a few inches.
Cautious A Ministry of Works spokesman had little comment to offer when asked for details of the new buildings. He said he was not prepared to say when tenders would be called. “Our Auckland office has produced drawings and we are making arrangements to get the buildings up as soon as we can,” he said. He would not say how long the buildings would take to complete.
Gear Waiting The airport manager (Mr A. I. R. Jamieson) said the equipment for the instrument ■ landing system had arrived in Wellington. City Council engineers had been busy during the last few months surveying the areas at each end of the runway and negotiating with owners of the land involved, he said. Co-operation “The council is doing all that it can in co-operating with the Civil Aviation Administration and the Ministry of Works to have this navigational aid programme expedited,” said Mr Jamieson.
Mr Jamieson said the council’s architects were well on the way to completing plans for extensions to the office block of the terminal building to house monitoring devices required for the operation of the navigational aids.
