ISLAND RESORT PLAN

(New Zealand Press Association)

AUCKLAND, April 1

A tourist resort capable of housing 20,000 visitors a year will be established on Pakatoa Island in the Hauraki Gulf. It will be served by hydrofoils at the end of this year. Sir Robert Kerridge said this evening that his organisation had bought the island, off the east coast of Waiheke Island, from a private concern. “This will be our first major tourist development,” he said.

Pakatoa Island was formerly a Salvation Army alcoholics’ institution for women, and in 1943 was used as a home for old men. Recently its 60 acres have been used as a holiday resort with a guesthouse capable of accommodating 60 people. “Our plans will be to build 150 to 200 little chalets,” said Sir Robert Kerridge. “The existing accommodation will be modernised. “This would provide accommodation for 400 people at a time.”
