PORT TRAIN SERVICE
Curtailment ' Not Planned ; “There are no immediate 1 plans to curtail the Christ- ' church-Lyttelton train ser- ’ vice,” says the Christchurch 1 chief stationmaster (Mr W. A. Campbell) in a letter to ' the Heathcote County Council. He was answering a request from the county for the needs of Hillsborough and Heathcote to be taken into account in any review of the timetable resulting from the opening of the road tunnel. “However, in accordance with long-established practice, passenger counts are taken on all services every six months. The continued running of services is reviewed in the light of the patronage being afforded them. “If the service is not being patronised consideration will, of course, be given to its curtailment. “I hope that patronage by the public will be sufficient to warrant the retention of services to meet the requirements of your county,” the letter concludes. “They will wait six months and then come down like a ton of bricks on us,”’ said Cr. W. B. Laing (Valley riding). “We shall meet that when we come to it,” commented the chairman (Mr J. C. Holliss).
