WAR-TIME BOMBER

Lancaster At Wigram

The third Lancaster bomber to visit Christchurch since 1944 landed at Christchurch airport yesterday morning. It brought the French Military Attache (Captain de Fregate M. Veyrat) on his first official visit to the Dominion, and to the South Island.

Captain Veyrat said yesterday that the Lancaster now at Harewood would be handed over to the Transport Museum in Auckland on April 14. This will leave one other Lancaster in use by the French Navy at Noumea. He said the fate of this aircraft has yet to be decided.

The French Navy had replaced the Lancasters with DC4’s which will be used in Noumea for transportation and air-sea rescue operations, he said.
