Union Opposed To Streamlining Plan
(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON, March 17.
Wellington watersiders are opposed to the methods proposed by the streamlining committee of the shipping industry and producer boards to hasten ships and cargo through Nfew Zealand ports.
This was reported today by the secretary of the Wellington Amalgamated Watersiders’ Union (Mr G. Tuau). Watersiders and transport industry union representatives had discussed the report at a special stop-work meeting on the waterfront this morning.
“The meeting decided to resist all projected attacks on working conditions that may emanate from the report,” said Mr Tuau.
“The meeting promised full support for the North Island Waterfront Workers’ Association's policy of shorter working hours and benefits from modern cargo handling methods,” he said. The meeting had also assured its support for the Federation of Labour in its
efforts “to combat the intended attacks on the unions within the transport industry.
“They oppose the blatant interference recommended with the industrial laws of the country,” he said.
