N.Z. BOXING TEAM

Three Chosen From Chch. Canterbury has three representatives in the New Zealand boxing team *o fight the touring Japanese in Wellington on March 23. They are B. Kendall (flyweight), L. Ny (bantamweight) and T. O’Donnell (light middle-weight). ' Ny, who won the elimination bouts for the bantamweight place at Canterbury Court on Thursday night, will be fighting one of Japan’s hopes for a gold medal at Tokyo. Mr Yasafusa Takahashi, the manager of the team of seven Japanese who have been boxing in Australia, said in Sydney that the bantam-weight Takao Sakurai was a potential Olympic winner. Mr Takahashi commented that Japan hoped to win two other gold medals at the Olympics, with the fly-weight, Masao Karasawa, who will be Kendall’s opponent, and . the light - weight, Kanemaru Shiratori. Karasawa, sft 7in, is well above the average height for fly-weights in any part of the world. The heaviest of the team of seven boxers is Kichijiro Hamada, who will fight O’Donnell. The team, announced yesterday by the selector, Dr. D. R. Tipping, according to a Press Association report, is: Fly-weight, Kendall; ban-tam-weight. Ny; featherweight, T. George (Auckland); light welter-weight, B. Maunsell (Otematata); welterweight, W. Coe (Wellington); light middle-weight, O’Donnell. A light-weight will be added to the team after M. Santos (Auckland) has met P. Lister (Gisborne) in a preliminary to the Tuna Scanlan - Gomea Brennan Empire title fight in Auckland tonight.
