7 6,000 Expected At Scanlan Title Bout

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, March 13. More than 16,000 people are expected to attend the British middle-weight boxing title bout between Tuna Scanlan and Gomeo Brennan at Carlaw Park tomorrow night.

This would mean that a record purse might also be paid out. The record belongs to the Eddie Cotton-Johnny Halafihi fight. Cotton received £2400 and Halafihi £l6OO. Scanlan’s manager. Mr Leon Tansey, thinks Scanlan will be a hard man to beat tomorrow. Since his return to the ring on November 7, Scanlan has scored three wins from three fights, against Pat O’Grady, the American Mel Fergisson and the British middle-weight champion, Mick Leahy. He has won 39 of his 51 bouts, scoring his last knockout against Johnny Smith in November, 1961. Brennan has had 68 fights for 59 wins, five losses, and four draws. He went the distance with Rubin Carter in a contest earlier this year and Carter has since knocked out the world champion, Emile Griffith, in one round.
