Union Proceeds Against Board
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 12. The North Island Electrical Workers’ Union had begun legal proceedings against the Hutt Valley Electric Power and Gas board in actions claiming wrongful dismissal and seeking recovery of wages alleged to be due, said the board’s general manager (Mr R. R. Brown), today. “The board is satisfied that this is the only appropriate course and will strongly defend these actions,” he said. As the proceedings had been instituted the question of wages payable was now sub-judice and the union had no grounds left for refusing to go to arbitration on the terms laid down by the Minister of Labour and the additional terms concerning seniority agreed to by the board, said Mr Brown.
