MAGISTRATE’S COURT Man Admits Wilful Damage And Disorderly Behaviour

After refusing to pay for al meal at the El Dorado Cafe at | 1.30 a.m. on March 13, Daniel; Tinirau, aged 32, a mechanic, later became involved in an argument and smashed two chairs, said Detective Sergeant D. C. Lee in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. The accused pleaded guilty, before Mr E. A. Lee, S.M., to charges of wilfully damaging the chairs, valued at £7, and to behaving in a disorderly manner. On the first charge he was fined £5, in default 14 days’ imprisonment, and was ordered to make restitution. He was fined £5, in default seven days’ imprisonment, for disorderly behaviour. ON ENCLOSED PREMISES Robin Dean Turner, aged 22, a workman, pleaded guilty to a .charge of being found unlawfully on enclosed premises. He was remanded on bail to March 19 for sentence. Detective Sergeant Lee said the accused was seen leaving an unoccupied room of a girls’ hostel in Cranmer square at 1.45 am. on March 13. When found by police the accused said he had gone to the hostel to see one of the girls. CONVERTED MOTORCYCLE On a charge of unlawfully converting a motor-cycle, from the Ashley State Forest camp on February 6, Francis Alan Sparks, aged 32, unemployed, was remanded on bail to March 19 for sentence. He pleaded guilty. Detective Sergeant Lee said the accused admitted to police having taken the motor-cycle from a shed. After using it he put it back in the shed badly damaged. REMANDED A woman, who was granted interim suppression of her name, was remanded on bail to March 19 on a ■charge of assaulting a constable on March 12. CHARGE DISMISSED A charge against Rae Edwin Jack Anderson of careless driving in Woodham road on February 8 was dismissed on payment of costs. The defendant, who pleaded not guilty, was represented by Mr G. T. Mahon. OTHER TRAFFIC CASES On other traffic charges brought by the police, offenders were dealt with as follows: . CHARGE DENIED Charged with driving in a manner which might have been dangerous on February 2, Russell Raymond Martin, aged 43, a carpenter (Mr H. Quigley), was fined £2O and his driver’s licence was cancelled for one year as from March 20. He pleaded not guilty to this charge. On a charge of having no warrant of fitness, to which Martin pleaded guilty, he was fined £2. Constable A. R. McFarlane said he followed Martin along Tuam and Barbadoes streets and Bealey avenue at 12.25 am. Martin travelled across several intersections at 30 miles an hour, cut a comer turning into Barbadoes street, and moved across to the wrong side of the road twice. There was a strong smell of liquor on Martin’s breath and he said he was a careful and considerate driver and never travelled at more than 20 miles an hour. CHARGE DISMISSED There was little doubt that a third car blocked the defendant’s view and gave him a false sense of security, said the Magistrate when dismissing a charge of failing to give way to the right against Edward Henry Kennedy, aged 27, a taxi-driver (Mr A. Champion), Kennedy pleaded not guilty. FINED £lO Raynor Thomas Neal, aged 45, a storeman, was fined £5 on a charge of having no current driver’s licence and £5 for careless driving on February 11. CHARGES DISMISSED A charge of careless driving at the intersection of High and Colombo streets on February 16 against Robert James Humphrey, aged 18, a student (Mr M. F. Hobbs) was dismissed. Humphrey pleaded not guilty. A charge of failing to give way on February 16 against Arthur Ernest Meecham, aged 45, a postman (Mr A. N. J. Milne), was dismissed. Meecham pleaded not guilty.
