CAMBODIAN RIOTING
‘Govt. Officials Took Part’ (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) WASHINGTON, March 12. Cambodian Government officials took part in yesterday’s demonstrations in Phnom Penh, during which the United States Embassy was sacked, a State Department spokesman said today. The spokesman declined to identify any of the officials involved, but told a press conference: “I would not describe them as low-level.” The spokesman said he was not aware the officials had engaged in any physical violence, such as throwing stones. He was not saying that the demonstration was directed by the Government, he said. There had been no breach of security during the invasion of the Embassy, such as the loss of code books or files, he said. The State Department has announced “a full review of the facts.” Officials intimated this would be an examination of all phases of American-Cambodian relations, which have steadily deteriorated since last November.
