LEPROSY CONTACTS

Doctors Asked For Vigilance (N.Z. Press Association) HAMILTON, March 12. Four leprosy contacts were being watched by the Department of Health in Waikato, the Medical Officer of Health (Dr. J. F. Dawson) said today. They showed no signs of having contracted the disease and were only being watched in case they did. They could not carry or spread the disease to others. The contacts had been either members of families, or were living in homes, where a leprosy case had been reported. There were three lepers in New Zealand, according to the Director-General of Health’s 1963 report. They were all in Auckland and were Pacific Islanders. Dr. Dawson said that doctors had been alerted to be on the look-out for the disease in a Department of Health newsletter.
