SOMETIME’S VICTORY

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE, February 16. The New Zealand-bred Caulfield Cup winner. Sometime, is now a clear favourite in the £12,000 Australian Cup, to be run at Flemington on March 9, after brilliantly winning the £5OOO Alister Clarke Stakes ait Moonee Valley yesterday. Sometime survived a protest after beating Chokra by a head with Cheek Up one length and a quarter away third. The champion mare, Wenona Girl,- missed a place in the Clarke Stakes. After being prominent throughout she was baulked for a run in the straight. The Melbourne jockey, I. Saunders, got a last-minute mount on Sometime when his regular jockey, W. Pyers, who leaves soon to ride in France, was suffering from reaction to injections he had preparatory to going abroad. Saunders, recently returned from a successful riding season in Mauritius, handled Sometime well. South Australian form has proved exceptionally good in Melbourne this season. The three-year-old Summertime colt, Sun Lad, confirmed this in scoring an all-the-way win in the Romsey Handicap yesterday. Sun Lad, which is out of Impeccable, won from Civic and Monte Cristo (Messmate —Renegade). Periled, which is raced by Mr and Mrs S. B. Watkins, of Auckland, scored an overdue win in the Sherwood Welter. It was his first success since winning a welter race at Caulfield in December, 1962. But his good showing was anticipated, as he had heavy support, and firmed from 12/1 to 6/1. Perilad, a six-year-old gelding by Perilous from Country Maid, won in a photo-finish by half a head from the favourite, Great Cheer, with Meadow Step a length away, third.
