South African Attack Not So Terrifying
(New Zealand Press Association) HAMILTON, February 16. If the performance of the South African attack in its drawn match against Northern Districts is any criterion, New Zealand batsmen should be able to give a good account of themselves in later matches on the tour. Apart front a brief period after lunch on Saturday, the Northern Districts batsmen held the stage.
When B. H. Pafiaaudeau made a surprising dectanaitaom the Northern ride was well within reach of the visitors’ total ot 357 for seven dectafed, with 244 on the board fixfive wickets. TSte South African attack suffered from dropped catches, but in the main the Northern batting was in control with the left-hander, G. V. Giles, providing the highlight of the innings—-a 60 made in 110 minutes. Throughout his innings Giles Was in oocxtnoi of the situation. Some of has cover drives were copybook efforts. This innings was has best ever for Northern Districts, easily bettering his previous best, 26 against Otago, two seasons ago. Giles had a second wicket partnership of 95 with- the opener, W. P. Bradburn. But with his dismissal, the South
Africans gained a breakthrough with Bnaxfoum, Dariraudeau and B. Sutcliffe felling vtathns to Goddard in quick succession. Ait one stage Goddard bowled six. overs, five at them maddens, tar one run and three wriekefts. However, M. Q. Langdon and P. B. McGregor fought back well and by sound batting brought Northern right bank on top. .Ait the declaration, both' had passed their half century. McGregor batted 186 minutes tar his 58 not out E. 'J. BattUow ata A J, Pdithey entertained the large crowd with some fine hdittding in South Africa’s second innings. 81 runs being scored in 35 minutes before a cloudburst caused play to be abandoned. Within minutes Seddon Park was covered in water. Hundreds of spectators were
