East-Shirley Takes 1st Innings, Bonus

East Christchurch -' Shirley, with a greatly improved allround performance, took first innings and bonus points a few moments before stumps in its match against Lancaster Park at the oval.

Only P. B. Wight, who scored a wristy and fluent 38 and R. T. Dowker profited for long against the accurate EastShirley attack and the keen fielding. Dowker, except when, he took 16 with no trouble off an over from W. J. Thomas, made little attempt to dominate the bowling but by the same token, was rarely in any bother. All of the East bowlers stuck to their tasks well:' Thomas’s opening spell was hostile; C. K. Smart, as usual, did not bowl poorly: D. I. A. Cameron kept his left-arm spinners on' the spot all through; and B. G. Anderson cleaned up the tail quickly. East was given ahother good start—an opening partnership of 47 this time—but after B. A. Haworth and J. D. Capstick left fairly quickly, P, G. Coman settled in to play his best senior innings this season.

Calculated Blows A. G. Duckmanton was hit out of the attack by a series of calculated blows from Coman and in B. R. Avery, he found a willing and particularly ■able partner. And Avery’s chief claim for the honours was a six hit from the south end of the wicket that landed threequarters of the way up the embankment. The umpires were Messrs. H. C. Moore and T. Mathie.
