SIX APPEALS HEARD
X Five Dismissed Five appeals against sentence heard in the Supreme Court yesterday were dismissed by Mr Justice Macarthur. His Honour reserved his decision on an appeal against conviction. The appeals dismissed were those of Peter Harry Hofhuis. aged 41, against three months’ imprisonment on a charge of being idle and disorderly: David John McCormick, aged 28 (Mr N. D. Thomson) against a sentence of three years’ imprisonment on two charges of burglary; John William Davidson, aged 22. against a sentence of 18 months’ imprisonment on a charge of burglary; Allan Sydney Simmiss. aged . 19, against a sentence of Borstal training bn charges of unlawful taking of a car and a truck; Thomas Shearer, aged 42. against a sentence of six months’ imprisonment on a charge of being a rogue and vagabond: and James Douglas Corbett, aged 52 (Mr B. J. Drake) against a sentence of 12 months’ imprisonment on a charge of indecent assault on a young girl. His Honour reserved his decision on an appeal by Stanley Trevor McLeish, aged 24 (Mr A. D. Holland) against conviction on a charge of careless driving causing death. Mr I. C. J. Polson appeared for the Crown in all the appeals.
Sentence Reduced On Appeal A sentence imposed on Ralph Richard Mitchell in the Magistrate’s Court in Dunedin on November 28 was reduced by Mr Justice Wilson in the Supreme Court yesterday. Mitchell had been sentenced to six months’ imprisonment for assisting an escaped mental patient to avoid being retaken. His Honour reduced the sentence to one of four months’ imprisonment Mr N„ W. Williamson appeared for the Crown. Mitchell was not represented. For Antarctica.—The United States naval supply tanker, Chattahoochee will leave for McMurdo Sound this morning with the season's last petroleum cargo.
