SUPREME COURT YOUTH FOUND GUILTY OF FALSE PRETENCES

Peter John Joseph Turner, aged 20, was yesterday found guilty by a jury in the Supreme Court .on two charges of false pretences and one of attempted false pretences. Mr Justice Wilson remanded Turner in custody until February 19 for sentence.

Mr N. W. Williamson appeared for the Crown, and Mr ?.. L. Kerr for Turner. Turner was charged with obtaining goods and money to a total valuue of £9 10s from Quality Tailors, Ltd., by false pretences, obtaining goods and money to a total value of £8 5s from Farren Price Jewellers by false pretences, and attempting to obtain goods and money to a total value of £5 10s from the D.1.C., Ltd., by false pretences- Alt the crimes were committed on November 22. On Thursday evidence was given by persons who sold goods and . received the cheques in the three shops. Yesterday, Detective B. J. Preston said that he interviewed Turner on November 22, and the accused admitted stealing a cheque-book and passing the valueless cheques

to the D.I.C. and Quality Tailors. On November IT, the witness said, he received a further complaint from Farren Price Jewellers, and on December 3 the accused also admitted this offence. ’ Mr Kerr called no evidence for the defence.
