BLINDED—TO HELP SIGHT
Second Cornea Operation (N.Z.P.A- Reuter) JOHANNESBURG. Doctors at the St. John Eye Hospital, Barakwanath, will make an African man totally blind—so that he may see again. Johannes Sibanyeni was blind for three years until the corneas of a white donor restored his sight a year ago. But now cataracts are forming on the lenses of his eyes, and Johannes is going blind again. “We shall have to remove the lenses from Johannes’ eyes, lea-zing him totally blind,’’ a doctor said. “Then we shall give him new lenses, and sight, in the form of spectacles.”Johannes was blinded nearly four years ago when he slipped into a couldron of boiling caustic soda at work. It damaged his corneas, and caused the present deterioration of his lenses.
