In Defence Of Biltong
JOHANNESBURG. Butchers and cafe and delicatessen owners in Johannesburg have risen to the defence of biltong after reading a report that a bacteriologist considers it to be “hygienically unsatisfactory.” They pointed out that biltong has been the diet of South Africans since the Great Trek—and a hardier race they have yet to find. “You know what we sent over to England to help but with the food shortage during the Second World War?” said one butcher. - “Yes, biltong for British babies, “You know what all big kids cut their teeth on? You’ve guessed—biltong.”
