D. N. Hadfield Engaged To Ride On Account
The Riccarton jockey, D. N. Hadfield, will ride On Account in the Robert Patterson Handicap at Westport today. Hadfield had been engaged to ride Shalom, but this Washdyke mare has been scratched for the Westport Jockey Club’s feature race and first leg of the T.A.B. double.
On Account has 7-4, and Hadfield will i ave to ride the Riccarton gelding at about 51b or 61b overweight. After his fair run for sixth in the Craven Plate on his home track last Saturday week On Account could be in form for a solid run as a miler today. The prospects are for a firm track. Ups and Downs, the early favourite for the Patterson Handicap, has developed her best form on soft and heavy tracks, but she has raced well on firm ground at times, and looks the hardest for the Canterbury horses to beat. Ups and Downs is a stablemate of Garwan and Aspasia, form runners in minor races today. Aspasia is in the J. J. Corry Hack Handicap, the second leg of the T.A.B. double, and Garwan is in the McPadden Hack, second leg of the course double. The odds will not be attractive if Llansfair wins the Trial Stakes No. 1, the first leg of the course double. Few if any will be backed with confidence to beat Llansfair after her good second to Pay Rise over seven furlongs at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s summer meeting.
