RACING Waikato Royal Cup May Be Spectacular Race

“The Press” Special Service

AUCKLAND, February 14.

The prospect of a thrilling mile in the £2500 Royal Cup, has drawn widespread attention to the Waikato Racing Club’s summer meeting at Te Rapa tomorrow. The field is just about as good as it could be and the question of what will win seems to be occupying everyone.

Summer Regent is the likely favourite, and Tilka, from Wanganui, Hilldale, Boundless, and Karinx are other notable candidates.

Summer Regent is the topweight with 9-3, and one of four horses with which the Te Rapa trainer, R. T. Cotter, will be tackling the big race. Hilldale is one of the others, and the remaining two are Gitano and Melodic. Throughout the late spring and summer, Summer Regent has been outstanding in his ability to run the middle distances and staying courses with the best. If he wins tomorrow as a miler he will lay claim to being the best galloper in the country. In the draw for barrier positions Summer Regent secured No. 3, In that respect he gained a big advantage over most of his opponents and particularly over Boundless and Karinx, which will be starting right on the outside. There is a run of nearly half a mile to the first turn from the mile post. Boundless and Karinx will, nevertheless, need to go very fast if they are to avoid being forced over much extra ground on the bend to the home straight. Boundless, which is a Riccarton three-year-old of some quality, will be meeting Summer Regent a couple of pounds worse than last time when the Te Rapa gelding beat him pointlessly at weight-for-age in the Trentham Stakes, 11 furlongs, on January 27. Summer Regent and Hilldale, a four-year-old gelding with 8-1, race in different ownerships so they will not be bracketed on the totalisator. Hilldale has pace and a handy barrier position to go with it. He won a mile at Te Rapa in November under 7-11 going fast time, and allows his trainer an excellent second string in tomorrow’s big event. Although scratchings have occurred since the acceptances were taken on Monday it is almost certain that a full Add of 24 will go to the post. The return of horses originally balloted has kept up the number. Wilful is a worthwhile light-weight which gained reentry when Glen Count and Good Day Peter were scratched. Vogel Bloem, from Trentham, is another light-weight chance, but Tilka, with 7-11, seems the best prospect by a long way in the bottom half of the handicap. The T.A.B. double will be the Royal Waikato Cup and the Empire Handicap, an intermediate middle-distance, in which Vinesse, Lionheart (from Wanganui), Mexicali, and Ravenwood are notable. The offering of £ll,OOO odd in stakes has had great response and the fields taken all round are quite the best that have been carded for Te Rapa. Besides the races of the T.A.B. double events attracting great interest are the Juvenile Handicap and the Commonwealth Stakes for three-year-olds. Each promises a fine race.

The ground is very firm and will be made to order for fast galloping unless there is unexpected rain.
