FLIES AND COMPOST
‘Not Breeding Grounds’ Concern nas been expressed by the Canterbury branch of the Organic Compost Society about recent reports in “The Press” on the breeding of flies from compost heaps. “Our main concern is that the public will form the impression that compost heaps are breeding grounds for flies,” said the president of the branch (Mr J. W. Thompson). “Ina properly-managed compost heap this is not so. “There is nothing for flies in compost,” said Mr Thompson. “They are just not interested. “Lots of people have a general refuse corner which is not true compost, and which will breed flies. “Most of the statements which have appeared have given a lot of sound advice, and there ,is nothing there we can disagree with,” he said. “Our contention is, however, that if you expose your waste in the proper manner, you have no fly problem.”
