TRAP FOR FLIES

Description Given

Since Mr E, Roberts, sen., of Culverden, has written about fly traps last imported from Australia 25 years ago. and suggested they be manufactured in Christchurch to help control the fly ' menace, several readers have written to “The Press” asking for further details. Mr Roberts has supplied a sketch of the trap and given a detailed description as follows: “Imagine you have a basin of workable clay about four inches deep. Push the centre bottom upwards five inches Slice off the top centre to leave a circular opening four inches across The centre chimney is one inch higher than the rim of the basin. The main centre piece of the basin, when pushed up, will be domed-shaped. “That is the centre-piece of the trap Letween it and around it and the wall of the basin is a circular channel which is filled with water. The basin stands on three legs each an inch in length.” he says For house flies, Mr Roberts stands the traps on jam in a place where flies gather. The basin has a well-fitting glass or plastic top to give plenty of light. .“The flies crawl under the trap to get the jam and fly up to the light ano crawl through the circular opening in the dome They have not the sense to fly down again, but fly around in the light till tired, when they fall into the water channel and drown Any still on the wing at sunset soon drop with the evening fall in temperature “It the trap is set over a four-gallon tin it will be mainly blowflies that are caught,” says Mr Roberts.
