ELECTRICAL SUPPLY
Power House Destroyed (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE, Feb. 14. Fire destroyed Swati Hill power house on the banks of the Murray river, 211 miles north-west of Melbourne, this morning. Workmen fled as four large fuel tanks burst into flames and exploded. All the town, which has a population ’of 6179, was without electricity but the hospital was operating on its own stand-by supply. The State Electricity Commission will give temporary supply to Swan Hill by tonight. The £250,000 diesel driven power house is owned by the Swan Hill Borough Council. It is one of the few municipal-owned power houses in the state. Last year the Swan Hill council decided against a take-over bid by the State Electricity Commission. The brick power house was built about 20 years ago. The first one, on the same site, was destroyed by fire in 1940.
