Centenary Of Arthur’s Pass
Sir, —It is good to mark the centenary of the first major, route opened to the West Coast from the time of its ; first crossing by Sir Arthur Dudley Dobson. However, the credit for discovery truly rests ' with some unknown Maori. Sir Arthur Dobson’s great merits as an explorer and surveyor jested considerably on his skill and willingness in absorbing what the Maoris had to teach, We might ponder the fact that most of our centenaries are pakeha centenaries.—Yours, etc., ELSIE LOCKE. February 13, 1964.
