Flies

Sir, —All the fuss over flies bores me after my experience. On November 17, T 961,

you published a letter in which I referred to my inability to get a butter cooler in Christchurch. I also referred to my experience in Dunedin, a few years before, when I had to go three sections hut to get flypaper. Now, this year. I have had the same experience here. I have found only one grocer who could supply me; and now, after having about half a dozen up, the flies are nowhere near so bothersome.—Yours, etc., R. M. THOMSON, February 13. 1964.

Sir,—There is • a popularshady spot at Scarborough, Sumner, complete With modern tea rooms. Monday morning. is a great sight, the surroundings being covered with empty ice cream cartohs, bags, cigarette covers, drinking straws, butts, matches, and odd bottles. Most of the visitors arrive in modem cars, spick and span, and forget to use the rubbish drums provided. Perhaps they think they are at home. This litter breeds flies. The safe bathing is much appreciated, but numerous dogs,' mainly brought by their kind owners, career about, indulging in leg-lifting exercises, soiling un-attended. clothes, and frightening small children. There is. a by-law but no-one to enforce it. The mess left by dogs and their owners breeds flies. While visiting the mainland of China a few years ago I noticed nearly every third person carried a fly swot and no flies -were to be seen. The town was cleaner than Christchurch.— Yours, etc., KIWI. February 12, 1964.
