Level Crossings
Sir,—The best way of preventing level-crossing accidents is not to have level crossings. In 1921 a rough estimate cost for bridging all i level crossings in New ZeaHand came to little over £1 I million. Today we are more i millions, in costs, short of the | ideal- of no level-crossings : than we were 43 years ago. j Mr McAlpine has told us the : difficulties, but overlooks the j remedies. Allocate £1 million , a year to local bodies in ths North Island, and the same in the South Island, and let them employ New Zealand consulting engineers and contractors. For speed, do the easiest bridging first and get ahead quickly. This would place no burden on the already busy Ministry of Works. As for finding £2 mil- | lion annually for- a little I while, my suggestion is to divert this amount from the immense vote for State elecj tricity, where other reforms I could save much more than ; that amount. But that is am : other story.—Yours, etc.. ARTHUR LUSH. ; February 12, 1964.
