Young Romney Ewes Sell Well At Tinwald

Although they did not quite reach the spectacular levels that some vendors expected, there Was a very strong sale for young Romney ewes at the opening of the Ashburton County breeders’ ewe fair at Tinwald yesterday, values being up on last year’s rates by about 20s a head. As usual, the fine display of Romney two-tooths seen at this fair commanded a definite premium on late market rates. On the other hand- though some good fine wool young ewes were entered, these generally did not meet such a strong sale, and values were barely up to recent market quotations.

The two-tooth section of this year’s fair attracted a record entry of 35,985, compared with 29,063 last year. The offering, described as one of the biggest of its type seen in the' Southern Hemi-.-sphere, was handled expeditiously in nine hours. The fair was again notable for the excellence of the young ewes and although the district is still in near drought conditions the sheep, almost without exception, were in forward condition.

Although the entry was big, values were well maintained throughout, and there was no evidence that the supply exceeded the demand. Almost the entire selection found buyers under the hammer. Sheep went to South Canterbury, North Canterbury, Banks Peninsula, the West Coast, and even to Invercargill, though most found local purchasers. Well Up Compared with a year ago, values for Romneys were about 20s better, and for 13 pens sold yesterday the average price was about 16s ahead of rates received for the same vendors’ sheep last year. In the view of one observer this advance was justified on the basis of recent realisations for wool and lamb, and the market was therefore relatively realistic. There was, however, a feeling in some quarters that tile market might have gone higher, but no doubt the dry state of pastures in the province prevented buyers from being carried away. Romneys reached the £6 mark or bettered it six times, and sales at better than £5 were frequent, whereas last year the top price was only £5 ss. Comparatively few Romneys sold under the 80s mark. The best of the Romneys sold from £5 10s to £6 Ils, with good sorts making from £5 to £5 10s, average to good from 90s to 98s, and others from about 73s to 85s. . The distinction of obtaining top price went to C. Culloty (Ashburton), with 118 at £6 Ils. R. W. Oakley (Mereoak). who topped the market last year at' £5 ss, was again close at hand with 104 making £6 7s 6d. The tops of a big selection of fine Sheep from the Ashburton Racing and Trotting Club sold up to £6 6s for 112. A. W. Macdonald (Dromore) had a pen of 65 at £6 2s 6d and 68 at £6, and Jamieson Bros. (Dromore) sold 96 at £6. . Several vendors recorded high averages for sizeable entries, and among these were A. W. Macdonald who averaged about £5 13s 3d for 402 selling from £5 4s to £6 2s 6d compared with 91s 3d for 310 last year, the Ashburton Racing and Trotting Club with 516 making from £5 Is to £6 6s, and averaging nearly £5 ,12s compared with 88s -2d for 555 last year, and C. M. Hill (Newlands) with 434 selling from £5 2s to £5 18s, and averaging £5 Ils 6d compared with 344 averaging 93s 9d last year. , . More Restrained

There was a more restrained market for the fine wool young ewes. Some excellent top quality sheep were yarded, and these made values fairly close to those recently paid at Addington. but for the general run values were below recent Addingon rates. For 10 pens of fine wool ewes sold yesterday values were only about 4s in advance of prices paid for.similar sheep last year. The best of the fine wool ewes realised from about 86s to 925, with good at 79s to 84s, average to good at about 70s to 78s, and others at 62s t 0 69s - - A. J. Watson (Seafield) sold 179 Corriedales at 92s and two pens of halfbreds at 84s and 85s. D. G. Chisnall (Eskdale) had 96 Corriedales at 90s and the same price was paid for 58 from K. W. Busch (Pendarves) and 88 from A. W. Taylor (Springfield), who also had 71 halfbreds at 91s. A. W. Williamson (Wheatstone) also had 212 Corriedales at 89s. . For three-quarterbreds R. H. Maidens (Haymarket) received 955, -W. A. Franks (Maronan) was paid up to 92s for 68 and R. D. Ferriman (Windermere) had a sale of 102 at 91s. ■ A. J. Srhoy (Lowchffe) realised 89s for 123 Border Leicester-Corriedale cross ewes, D H. Warren (Waipuna) was paid 86s for 60 Border Leicester Romneys and I. G. Kingsbury (Moana) sold Polwarth-Come-dales at up to 87s for 88. A feature of the sale .was its clean bill for lice.
