Cash And Amateur Cycling Titles

The cash and amateur cyclists held some of their championship events at English Park last night. They will be concluded next Wednesday night. In the amateur 4000-metre teams’ pursuit, the Christchurch team was no match for Papanui, which gained a lead of 10 yards in the first two laps and increased it to 40 yards at the end of the next lap. Papanui went on to win by 100 yards. W. Kendall (Papanui), who with A. Hood (Timaru) recorded smin 27sec in the semifinal of the junior 4000-metre individual pursuit on Saturday were matched against each other in the final last night. Kendall took the pursuit and recorded smln 22sec, with Hood only Isec slower. Both rode within the qualifying time of smin 25sec to take part in the national championship. D. Stowell (Timaru) had little difficulty in beating W. Hensley (Christchurch) for the senior pursuit title. After dead-heating in the semi-final of the cash two-mile pursuit championship on Saturday, K. Brown and B. Spicer raced again last night. Brown appeared to be having trouble with his machine and did not Sut up a good performance, picer winning in 4min 15.2 Sec, which established a new record. The previous record was held by D, Swanston with a time of 4min 24sec.

F. Hooper just managed to shade K. Jeffery in two straight sprints to win the 500 metres sprint title. In the five-mile title events, A. O’Hagan cleared out with six laps to go and opened up a gap of 50 yards on the field. He held this position for two laps and then drifted back. Then J. Swanston made a solo break and with two laps to go was 50 yards ahead of the field. At the bell he had improved his position to 70 yards.

He was now in an unbeatable position and carried on for a comfortable win. Results:—
