CAR SALE CASE
Briggs Found Not Guiltv (N.Z. Press Association) INVERCARGILL, Feb. 13. A former world speedway champion, Barry Briggs, of Christchurch, was found not guilty on a charge of false pretences by a jury in the Supreme Court at Invercargill today. The jury took 25 minutes to reach its verdict.
Briggs was discharged by Mr Justice Henry. Briggs had denied obtaining a cheque for £1660 from Crosbie’s Garage. Ltd., by falsely representing the mileage on a D.K.W. Auto Union SP. coupe—the only one in New Zealand—which he sold to them.
Briggs admitted turning the speedometer reading back from 35,000 miles to about 6000. but he denied this was done to defraud anyone.
He said he acted on a suggestion by an English garage which had reconditioned the engine of the car. At the time he did it he had no intention of selling the car.
