Cardigan Bay First Leg Favourite

“The Press” Special Service

AUCKLAND, January 17. Cardigan Bay’s final appearance before he goes to Australia to compete at 'the Inter-Dominion Championships in Melbourne will be the major attraction at the Auckland Trotting Club’s January meeting tomorrow night. Cardigan Bay is the ruling favourite for the M. G. Pezaro Memorial Handicap, first leg of the double. With few exceptions the field which will oppose Cardigan Bay tomorrow night is only moderate in strength compared with the New Zealand and Auckland Cup standards. The Auckland champion won the former event from the 54-yard mark and the Auckland Cup from 78 yards. This time he will give away starts of up to 60 yards.

The hardest, for Cardigan Bay to beat tomorrow night will probably be the Canter-bury-trained Jay Ar. Garry Dillon, winner of five races this season including the Waikato Trotting Club’s Hamilton Handicap last Saturday night, will be the popular fancy for the Premier Handicap, second leg of the double. The forecast is for continued fine weather. The track will be firm and fast.
