TROTTING Asia Minor May Test Trotters At Washdyke

It is generally expected that Asia Minor will improve a very sound record for his Leeston owner-trainer, W. J. Doyle, when he contests the Gleniti Handicap at Washdyke today. This race is the principal event for trotters on the second day of the Timaru Trotting Club’s summer meeting.

Asia Minor, a four-year-old gelded son of Light Brigade and Passive, will be trying for his fourth win for the season and his third from his last tour starts. Asia Minor’s recent winning sequence began in the Mitcham Handicap at Ashburton on Boxing Day. Five days later he was successful again in the Improvers’ Handicap on the first night of the New Year meeting at Addington. He rounded off his campaign at Addington with a third to Doctor Kyle and Uteena in the Grandstand Handicap on the second night. Uteena and Doctor Kyle will be two of Asia Minor’s rivals again today. They could be the two hardest tor him to beat. Uteena and Asia Minor both started from the limit in the Grandstand Handicap and a head separated them at the finish. Today both are on 24 yards. Doctor Kyle gave Uteena and Asia Minor 24 yards start and soundly beat them at Addington. As far as these two are concerned he will be no worse off this time, although he is the back marker on 48 yards. Strong Bracket Beside Uteena O. M. Quinlan will have another strong form runner to represent his stable. That is Castleton’s Gift which won twice in as

many starts at the Greymouth Trotting Club’s New Year meeting. Castleton’s Gift will start from the limit. Others on the same mark with sound form backgrounds include Flying Minstrel, which will be trying to improve on a solid patch of form at Greymouth, MacNamara, last Saturday’s Waimate Handicap winner, and Pieta, which was successful at Addington the last time she raced.

The South Canterbury and Winchester Handicaps will be important events today. The T.A.B. double will operate on these two races. With four last-start winners engaged and several other runners with winning form close up on their records there is bound to be a wide range of fancies in the first leg. Perhaps Lady Charles, Raft, and Central Range will prove to be the best of a wide-open field. Blonde Piper, Mile End, and Pancho Boy are a favoured trio tor the Winchester Handicap. There will be a double for course patrons only on the Rosewill and Pukaki Handicaps. Lightning Scott and Glenurquhart may be the successful combination.

The weather has been fine in South Canterbury during the week, so the track will be firm and fast. Fields are:— FIRST LEG OF ON-COURSE DOUBLE 11 a.m. ROSEWILL HANDICAP £300; trotters; 2:19 class; 14f.
