The United Nations
Sir, —The United Nations has only itself to blame for “the shadow” across the organisation because the organisation continues to belie its name. It has not united nations: it has divided them into ideological blocs and warring factions. The United Nations doctrine of ballot-box imperialism serves only to advance the economic interests of the United States and the political ambitions of neo-Communists and “guided democracies.” In the most dangerous international crisis of recent years—the United States-Soviet clash over Cuba—the United Nations was ignored and was impotent to influence the course of events. It was not the United Nations, but the British Government initiative that brought about the nuclear test ban treaty, the
most important breakthrough towards international peace and disarmament since 1945. United Nations policies —appeasement of the strong, as in Hungary and West New Guinea, and armed aggression against the weak, as in the Congo—are unworthy of support—Yours, etc., F.C. January 6, 1964.
