(N.Z. Press Association— Copyright)

BRISBANE. November 29.

The Australian test batsman, P. Burge, today severely punished the South African attack in a superb innings of 129.

Burge, making his third century of the season, piloted Queensland to a commanding first day score of 322 for four.

He hit 17 fours and a six in his innings which follows 1 scores of 283 and 205 not out in his two previous first-class innings this season. On a heart-breaking pitch the South Africans maintained a tight economical attack until midway through the afternoon when Burge cut loose. He drove and pulled with ferocious power and the onslaught only ended when P. Van Der Merwe made a splendid catch on the boundary. The South African vicecaptain leaped high to intercept the ball that seemed certain to go for six. The South Africans’ most successful bowler was J. T. Partridge who dismissed both Queensland openers. QUEENSLAND First Innings R. Reynolds, c Waite, b Partridge .21 S. Trimble, c R. G. Pollock, b Partridge .. .. 56 D. Bull, c Waite, b Seymour 56 P.
