GUIDES PLANT TREE IN PARK

40th Anniversary Marked A tree-planting ceremony was held by the North Canterbury Provincial Girl Guides' Association last night to mark the fortieth year of guiding in New Zealand. The tree, a copper beech, was presented by the City Council parks and reserves department and was planted by the provincial commissioner (Mrs J. H. Powell).

Those who attended the ceremony at South Hagley Park included representatives of guide companies in country and city districts; members of the provincial council; the Deputy-Mayor (Mr H. P. Smith); the Town Clerk (Mr C. S. Bowie) and Mrs Bowie; and the director of parks and reserves (Mr H. G. Gilpin) and Mrs Gilpin. Members of the 11th Merivale Company sang songs about trees. Speakers were Mr Smith and Mr D. Ames, a member of the provincial council.
