COMPLETION OF TUNNEL
Contractors’ Promise
Contractors on the administration building for the Christchurch-Lyttelton Road Tunnel Authority tied guaranteed to finish sections of the building required by the company installing the electronic controls by December 15, and to have the exterior completed in time for the official opening by the Queen Mother on February 27, the authority was told yesterday. Mr R. A. Witbrock, the chairman, said the architect (Mr P. J. Beaven) had reported that the contractors were co-operating to the full to have the building ready for the day when traffic would begin to flow. They were asking for an extra £2750 on the contract price in consideration for speeding up the contract. The quantity surveyor was investigating this amount. To achieve the completion, the contractors were transferring all the staff from the science block of the University of Canterbury at Ham to Heathcote. They expected to work during holidays and on Sundays. Mr W. P. Glue said that an extra month’s revenue from the tunnel would offset any amount which might be reasonable as an additional payment to the contractors.
