Clarke’s Kick Opens Score
[From A, R. VEYSEY, NZ.P.A. Special Correspondent] CAMBRIDGE, November 14. A magnificent kick by D. B. Clarke, from just inside his own half and six yards from the touch, gave New Zealand the lead within three minutes of the start. .
Play was inclined to be disorganised about the rucks and the scrums, and a voluble, excitable referee did not appear to help matters. New. Zealand had their first real sight of Gibson when he dummied past five players to take Cambridge on attack Phillips then sent Rosser away through some deplorable New Zealand- tackling and Gibson was up to take the final pass and score. Gethin missed the kick. New Zealand 3, Cambridge 3 When Cambridge failed to find touch, D. B. Clarke dropped a goal from wide on the 'lO-yard mark. The ball was true, but seemed to lack the lengtfi. The referee signalled the goal. New Zealand 6, Cambridge. 3 Following a line - out three minutes after the second spell started, Whineray burst away. He passed to Tremain and the big flanker charged on for 10 yards with men clinging to him before crossing for the try. Clarke missed a fairly easy conversion. , New Zealand 9, Cambridge 3 Three minutes later Tremain was in on to a breakdown, and Whineray carried on with another burst of fantastic power. Blocked,' he swung a perfectly judged left-footer far across the field to Dick's wing. The wfiiger collected the ball near the line and dived over. Clarke again missed. New Zealand 12, Cambridge 3 Cambridge brought a dramatic change to the trend of things when, with New Zealand attacking. D. B. Clarke came into the line and threw a bad pass to Macßae. It went over the centre's shoulder and Frankcom
piqked up on his 10-yard mark. He sprinted away to score mid-way between the posts and touch. Gethin’s kick missed. New Zealand 12, Cambridge 6 The students came away through a New Zealand back-line breakdown, but it was Briscoe from a ruck who put a high kick through, chased, and tipped up the taker. Whineray chimed in to pick up about half-way and the ball went via Watt, to Major, to Tremain who swirled through a tackle and raced over.. Clarke missed. New Zealand 15, Cambridge 6 From its own twenty-five, New Zealand swept through to another try' when' Dick, sprinted brilliantly down the touch-line and swung a kick •into the middle. Tremain was up to pick Up, feed to Watt. to.Caulton, who raced 35 yards to the corner then round behind the posts. Clarke converted and the match finished soon after.
