Courage Required To Face World Pressures
(Neu) Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON, Nov. 12. The historian of the future might well comment on the courage needed to live in the present-day world rather than try to reconstruct a picture of present-day life, said the American Ambassador, Mr Herbert B. Powell, in his first public address in Wellington. Speaking to members of the New Zealand-American Association, Mr Powell said the future historian could look back at the present generation and see that it was subjected to pressures from all sides—pressures which came from not knowing what was going to happen next. No other generation had had to live under such stresses. The Pacific area was experiencing considerable movement. In the United States there was a movement to the Pacific coast—a movement of people, trade and of scientific work.. On one side of the Pacific, however, the great power of China was openly dedicated to conflict with the free world and refused to allow its citizens to make contact with the outside world. “We will have to live with China for a tong time,” said Mr Powell. “We can best counter her with the free association of free peoples and help develop this area.” Earlier, commenting that people were living in a “dangerous world,” Mr Powell said some progress was being made such as the recent international treaty
to ban atomic testing as an example. He spoke of the dose ties between the United States and New Zealand through cultural exchanges and trade and said the United States was now New Zealand’s second best customer. It bought £47,000,000 worth of produce from the Dominion last year.
