Conference This Month On Civil Defence

The annual civil defence controllers’ conference will be held at Lincoln College this month. The conference will be held in two sections: one for delegates from civil defence groups 1 to 18 and from the Christchurch Regional Committee, and one for groups 19 to 27 and the Dunedin Regional Committee. The first section will be held from November 18 to 21, and the second from November 25 to 28. Both will have the same syllabus. The aim of the conference is to bring civil defence controllers, key members of their staff, and regional committee members up to date in certain aspects of civil defence, and to assist in the development of planning. The theme of the conference will be evacuation and mutual aid. About 60 representatives will attend each seetion. Their accommodation expenses at Lincoln College will be met by the Ministry of Civil Defence, but the various local bodies sending representatives will meet travelling expenses. On the first day of the conference delegates will hear an address on seismic sea waves by Mr A. E. Gilmour, of the New Zealand Oceanographic Institute and an ad-

dress on seismic sea wave learning systems by Mr J. J. Cronin, of the Post Office, and will see a demonstration of public warning by aircraft of the Royal New Zealand Air Force. There will also be a group discussion on evacuation in a situation where an early warning has been given. On the second day an address on traffic aspects in evacuation will be given by the district officer of the Transport Department (Mr D. L. Hogan) and on the police and civil defence by Chief Inspector W. A. T. McGuire. There will be .a session on earthquakes and a discussion on evacuation after an unheralded disaster. On the final day of the conference Captain G. M. Hart, of the Marine Department, and Lieutenant-Com-mander G. R. Hannan, of the Royal New’ Zealand Navy, will speak on evacuation by sea. Also an address on fallout in New Zealand wiil be given by Mr H. J. Yeabsley, of the National Radiation Laboratory of the Department of Health, and an address on the fire service by the Christchurch Metropolitan Fire Board’s chief fire officer (Mr L. R. Osmond'. Lieutenant-Colonel R. J. Moor, of the New Zealand Army, and Wing Commander R. A. Mackinder, of the Royal New Zealand Air Force, will speak on supply by air.
