ATONEMENT FOR CRASH
Suicide Bid By Railway Man (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) TOKYO, November 12. A railway construction chief attempted suicide yesterday because he felt responsible for a train crash the Associated Press reported. He is Shigeo Kubota, aged 51. Officials said he was in charge of a team that left heavy hydraulic jacks on tracks near Hiroshima yesterday. An air hose on an express train was severed, forcing it to stop. Another express rammed it from the rear and two persons were injured. Kubota fled into a nearby wood and tried to hang himself from a tree, police said. Fellow workers cut him down and he was taken to a hospital in a serious condition.
Suicide as a gesture of atonement was common in Japan under such circumstances, A.P. said.
